Prendete due giovani talentuosi, influenzateli quel tanto che basta con i suoni di Chicago, New York e Berlino e fateli crescere tra gli scaffali di uno dei più importanti negozi di dischi in città: il risultato finale sarà uno dei duo più esplosivi del momento, gli Homework. Di base ad Amsterdam, Zip Stolk e Tom Waist hanno conquistato in poco tempo pubblico, stampa e colleghi arrivando con i loro lavori ad attirare l'attenzione della Snatch! Records di Riva Starr, la Made To Play di Jesse Rose e non ultima la berlinese Exploited.

Prima di aver il piacere di vederli all'opera (per la prima volta a Roma!) nel secondo appuntamento stagionale al Lanificio, Milk ha scambiato quattro chiacchiere con loro per conoscerli un po' più a fondo. Buona lettura!

Tom, Zip, potreste presentarvi please?

Un tizio con gli occhiali di nome Zip e uno con la barba di nome Tom.

Proviamo ad immaginare la vostra vita tra vent’anni: pensate che la scuola sarà finita?  E gli Homework con essa?

Fin quando la gente amerà questo tipo di musica, noi continueremo a farla. Quindi tra vent’anni faremo sempre questo. Ma forse allora viaggeremo in prima classe con gli Oompa Loompa, portandoci dietro le nostre borse dei dischi…

Qual è stato l'evento più significativo per la vostra carriera?

L’uscita del nostro primo EP su Exploited è stata una figata, come toccare il cielo: ci ha in qualche modo catapultato nella scena house mondiale. Con l’uscita del vinile dell’EP "Hudson Square" sempre sulla stessa etichetta, si è materializzato un sogno: le prime uscite andarono sold out ancor prima di essere rilasciate, e con le successive accadde lo stesso. Ora è fra i più desiderati di ebay! Chi l’avrebbe mai pensato? Poi ci sono una serie di altri momenti nella nostra carriera in cui ci sono capitate cose straordinarie: suonare al Panorama Bar di Berlino ad esempio. E potremmo andare avanti per molto…

Se aveste l’opportunità di parlare davanti ad una platea, diciamo un milione di studenti di musica al SAE Institute di Londra (un po' come Steve Jobs alla Stanford University); è il loro giorno del diploma, quale sarebbe il vostro discorso?

Gli regaleremmo qualche verso di un poema di Charles Bukowsky, che recita:

“La tua vita è la tua vita, non lasciare che sia bastonata fino all’umidiccia sottomissione. Stai in guardia. Ci sono vie d’uscita. C’è luce da qualche parte, può non essere molta luce ma sconfigge la tenebra. Stai in guardia. Gli dei ti offriranno delle occasioni. Riconoscile, prendile. Non puoi sconfiggere la morte, ma puoi sconfiggere la morte nella vita qualche volta. E quanto più spesso tu impari a farlo, tanta più luce ci sarà. La tua vita è la tua vita, sappilo mentre ce l’hai. Sei una meraviglia, gli dei aspettano di compiacersi in te”.

Potreste nominarci qualche producer proveniente dalla vostra città natale, qualcuno che considerate una promessa? Chi sono i nuovi talenti e cosa li rende speciali?

Ci sono moti talenti provenienti da Amsterdam: uno dei mostri sacri della scena underground è San Proper: la sua musica è geniale nel più ambiguo ed eccezionale dei modi. Ha prodotto per la Perlon Records di Villalobos e con l'olandese Rush Hour.

Quali sono le vostre 5 tracce preferite al momento?

(1) Siamo molto soddisfatti del nostro nuovo remix per Andre Crom e Martin Dawson uscito in questi giorni su Exploited. (2) Poi una nostra nuova traccia pubblicata su Snatch! dal nome "Idlewild", (3) entrambi i remix di Deetron e Mr. Fingers per "Palm Leaves" di Gerd sono spesso in loop nello stereo del nostro studio. (4) Ancora, "Live Life" di Shur-I-Kan (5) ed infine "A Bigger Splash" di Lukas.

Detto tra noi: perchè ad Amsterdam stanno iniziando a vietare l’erba?

In realtà non siamo molto addentrati nella vicenda. Quando vivi ad Amsterdam il fascino dell’erba va in fumo. Preferiamo farci un buon bicchiere di Courvoiser e fumarci qualche Havana. Hi Tom, Hi Zip, could you introduce yourself to us? What are your characteristics and what are your defects?

One guy with glasses, called Zip. One guy with a beard, called Tom.

Let us imagine your life in twenty years: when do you think school will be out? Will the homework ever be over?

As long as people are listening, we will be making music. So hopefully we will still be doing this in twenty years time. But maybe we’ll be flying business class with Oompa Loompa’s carrying our record bags.

Is there a particular event that shaped the rest of your career?

Well, the release of our first EP on Exploited was a very important pinnacle. It sort of catapulted us onto the house music scene. The vinyl release of Hudson Square EP (Exploited) was also a dream come true. The first pressing sold out before it got released, so did the second one. Now it is a speciality item on eBay. Who would’ve thought? There are a number of instances in our career that amazing things occur. Playing Panormabar in Berlin was another one. We could go on and on…

If you would get the chance to address a congregation of, let’s say, a million music students at the SAE Institute in London (think: Steve Jobs at Standford University). It’s their graduation day, what would be your advice to them?

We would read them this poem by Charles Bukowski:

"Your life is your life, don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission. Be on the watch. There are ways out. There is a light somewhere. It may not be much light but it beats the darkness. Be on the watch. The gods will offer you chances. Know them, take them. You can’t beat death but you can beat death in life, sometimes. And the more often you learn to do it, the more light there will be. Your life is your life, know it while you have it.
You are marvellous, the gods wait to delight in you.

Could you name some promising, contemporary producers from your hometown of Amsterdam? Which new talents are around and what makes them so special?

There is a lot of talent running around in Amsterdam. One of the real underground legends is and always will be San Proper. His music is ingenious in the most ambiguous and exceptionally unique way. He has released on Villalobos’ Perlon and Amsterdam-based label Rush Hour.

What are your top 5 favourite tracks of the moment?

We’re very proud of our new remix for Andre Crom and Martin Dawson (1). Out now on Exploited. We’ve also got a new exclusive track out on Snatch!, called "Idlewild" (2). Both the Deetron and the Mr. Fingers mix of Gerd’s "Palm Leaves" are on high rotation in our studio (3). As are "Live Life" by Shur-I-Kan (4) and "A Bigger Splash" by Lukas (5).

Just between us: why are they trying to ban pot in the Netherlands?

We’re not big on weed, to be honest. When you live in Amsterdam the charm of pot slowly evaporates. We’d rather sip some Courvoisier and puff on some Havana’s.
