Drop Out Orchestra | Interview

Chi si celi dietro ai Drop Out Orchestra è un mistero: la segretezza del progetto è talmente curata che online non si trovano informazioni di alcun genere. Di loro sappiamo veramente poco, come che sono in due, vengono dalla Svezia, hanno una esagerata passione per funky-soul anni '70 e sono ottimi producers e remixers. Ma nulla di più.

In attesa di scoprirli (e ascoltarli!!!) nella data dell'opening del 28 Ottobre al Lanificio159, Milk ha intervistato Gary B, metà del duo, per conoscerli un po' più a fondo e capire quello che è il loro mondo. Buona lettura!

Avete viaggiato molto per i vari dj set, showcase, ecc. Qual è il club/luogo dove preferite esibirvi e dove il vostro sound da il meglio di sè?

Quest'anno è stato grandioso, ci siamo divertiti molto...di sicuro il MiniMuzikhol di Istanbul è stato speciale per noi, il pubblico era semplicemente fantastico. Per quanto riguarda il club dove ci siamo trovati meglio a livello di impianto, penso al Rust di Copenaghen che con la sua massiccia schiera di diffusori Funktion One resta difficile da battere.

Perché è così difficile trovare informazioni su di voi in rete? Avete scelto di creare una sorta di mistero intorno a voi o preferite semplicemente altri canali di comunicazione?

Beh, in realtà siamo abbastanza riservati per quel che riguarda la sfera privata. Abbiamo deciso da subito di tenere nascoste le nostre facce e i nostri nomi da internet e di parlare solo di musica in interviste come questa. Non stiamo cercando di creare un misterioso mito o altro, vogliamo solo mettere al 100% il fuoco sulla musica.

Tra i vostri lavori ci sono numerosi remix di brani degli anni '70 (come ad esempio in "Guest Mix For Sloth Boogie May"). Cosa avete "fatto vostro" di quel favoloso decennio? E cosa aggiungete a quei pezzi per renderli così attuali?

L'inizio della musica disco è stato un periodo veramente eccezionale, perché gli artisti scrivevano ottime canzoni e suonavano davvero gli strumenti, componendo meravigliosi arrangiamenti: la musica a quei tempi era una garanzia. Quando editiamo o remixiamo una di quelle canzoni cerchiamo di ritoccarle il meno possibile al fine di mantenere intatta l'atmosfera originale.

Il vostro sound è un ottimo mix di funk ed electro. Come una jam session tra Miami Horror e Plej con Cheryl Lynn in console. Come si fa a creare questo inconfondibile mix?

Semplice, abbiamo praticamente mantenuto serrato il suono della cassa e ampie le linee di basso.

Ancora una cosa: perché la musica svedese è così apprezzata da tutti in Europa? Ha a che fare forse con la lingua, la gente, la cultura...o cosa?

Non ho una risposta adatta a questa domanda. La mia ipotesi è che la nostra società tenda a prendersi cura dei musicisti emergenti più di altri paesi, ma non so davvero dare una risposta certa. Perché in Italia si mangia il miglior cibo? Ecco, credo sia la stessa cosa.

You've been travelling  a lot for dj sets, showcase, etc.. Which is your fave' club/location to perform at and were your sound gets its best?

We've had such a great year with many fun gigs... I guess Istanbul's MiniMuzikhol still is very special to us, the crowd there was just amazing. Sound wise I think Rust in Copenhagen and their massive Funktion One rig would be hard to beat.

Why it is so hard to find info about you while surfing on the net? Have you built an atmosphere of mistery around you or it is just a matter of preferring other ways to communicate?

Well, we're not that interesting in private. We decided early on to keep our faces and our names off the internet and to only talk about music in interviews like this. It's not that we're trying to create a mystery myth or something, we just want to focus 100% on the music.

In your work there are a lot of 70’s remixes (i.e. "Guest Mix For Sloth Boogie May"). What do you get from that terrific decade? And then what do you add to that pieces to make them so actual?

The early disco era was great because they wrote good songs, played real instruments and wrote really good arrangements. You can't go wrong with that. If we try to update or remix one of those songs we do as little as possible in order to keep the original vibe intact.

Your sound is a very good bland of funk attitude and electro beats. Like a jam between Miami Horror and Plej with Cheryl Lynn behind the console. How do you create this special Mix?

We basically keep our kick drums tight and our basslines loose.

Would you tell us one more thing: Why Swedish music is so onwards respect other countries in Europe? It’s something about language, people, culture… or what?

I don't have a good answer to that. My guess is that our society accepts struggling musicians more than other societies, but hey I don't really know. Why do Italy have all the best food? Same thing.
